GDG Cloud Sri Lanka #CloudKasthiram

I was always up for challenges and CloudKasthiram was one of the best challenges I faced so far. Even though I already had a small foundation in Qwiklabs, this is the first time I went doing 6 quests at one stretch. In this article, I am going to tell you about what is CloudKasthiram and what did I face in CloudKasthiram.

First of all !!

With a huge excitement, I registered for the event as soon as the registration was opened. Then I randomly selected many labs and started doing them. It was around the 2nd of October when I started completing labs aiming to finish quests.

The Quests

Most of the quests required in order to complete CloudKasthiram had Challenge Labs. Below is the list of quests that were listed for CloudKasthiram 2020.

  1. Getting Started: Create and Manage Cloud Resources
  2. Understanding Your Google Cloud Costs
  3. Perform Foundational Infrastructure Tasks in Google Cloud
  4. Deploy and Manage Cloud Environments with Google Cloud
  5. Build and Secure Networks in Google Cloud
  6. Monitor and Log with Google Cloud Operations Suite
  7. Build a Website on Google Cloud
  8. Implement DevOps in Google Cloud
  9. Deploy to Kubernetes in Google Cloud
  10. Secure Workloads in Google Kubernetes Engine
  11. Intro to ML: Image Processing

Challenge Labs are a little bit scary because they don’t provide you steps and you are all alone!! As an example, if you divert from the expected steps in Qwiklabs your account might get blocked. I faced that problem in the first most Challenge Lab I did. I was too negligent about guidelines and was trying to get the lab done quickly. It is a brilliant safety measure taken by Qwiklabs to limit resource usage for a particular lab.

Just hold on for a second and think what would really happen if you keep creating more and more clusters for an instance? Yeah! That’s what I meant.

Account has been blocked due to using excessive resources

Just don’t panic if you are blocked out. Contact Qwiklabs support and they will help you. Tell them exactly what happened. I must confess: They are super fast to reply and very supportive for students like us! #theBESTsupportTeam

BTW, if you ever got stuck in a lab please refer to Quicklabs guidelines.

If you don’t get a green check mark, please click on the Score fly-out on the top right and click Run Step on the relevant step. You will see a hint pop up giving you advice.

Score fly-out helps you to figure out where you got it wrong

My Badges

I got really cool badges after completing the quests. You can share them on social media as well. In order to mark the completion of CloudKasthiram, you are supposed take a screenshot of your Qwiklabs Public Profile and share it on social media with the hashtag #CloudKasthiram. Among the below quests what I loved the most was Intro to ML: Image Processing. It was a supercool quest.

The Swags!!

Last but not least I must tell you about the swag. Here’s the cool swag I am expecting to see at my doorstep in the next few weeks.

Swags for the CloudKasthiram

Finally….

I personally feel GDG CloudKasthiram was a very successful workshop for those who like challenges. In the beginning, I joined for the swag but in the end, I learned a great deal. I think for all the cloud technology enthusiasts, this is a really good opportunity to sharpen their knowledge, explore new technologies. Maybe we could have CloudKasthiram next year too...
